Caveats:

A.  The carriages/sleighs have been well kept in so far as they have been stored indoors from the time each was purchased by Bert Powell between 1938 and the early 1960’s all the way to the present day. At present the bones of the carriages/sleighs are good, but almost every carriage/sleigh is in need of some love and attention. In an ideal world the potential buyer of each carriage/sleigh would be able to see the carriage in person or arrange for a buyer’s rep to view the carriage in question. As sellers we would be happy to take whatever photos and videos are needed.

B. Moving the carriages/sleighs from King, Ontario (45 minutes north of Toronto) to each buyer’s destination of choice is the responsibility of the buyer and must be arranged by the buyer.

28. Old Sleigh

28. Old Sleigh (c. late 1800's we believe).  This sleigh may have come with the farm when it was bought in the 1950's. We are fairly certain the sleigh has been stored in the same spot for 70+ years without having been moved. We are not sure about the shafts - we may or may not have them. This is very much an "as-is" sale. All of the photos of #28 were taken in April 2024.

By rights I should likely be calling this an Old Cutter. Cutters, to differentiate them from sleighs, are considered light sleighs, with only one seat, and are usually pulled by just one horse. “Cutter” is a distinctly American term that does not appear to have been used prior to 1800. Cutters are usually broken down into two additional categories — Albanys and Portlands.

If you like sleighs and cutters, please note that there are 7 sleighs/cutters in this collection: #15, #16, #17, #18, #21, #22, #28.

Note: Additional photos are at the bottom of this page.

It is 2024 and as described in the opening blog posting, we are selling all 29 carriages in our possession on an individual basis. This is carriage (sleigh) #28.

29. Old Gig

29. Old Gig (c. late 1800's we believe).  This two wheel gig may have come with the farm when it was bought in the 1950's. We are fairly certain this gig has been stored in the same spot for 70+ years without having been moved. The shafts are permanently attached. The 16-spoke wheels are in solid shape and are quite beautiful - we could imagine someone buying this gig just for the wheels which is fine by us but you must take the entire gig. This is very much an "as-is" sale. All of the photos of #29 were taken in April 2024.

Note: Additional photos are at the bottom of this page.

A gig = a two wheeled cart pulled by one horse
