1. Governess Basket Cart (c. 1890).
Governess Basket Cart (c. 1890). This two-wheeled wicker and wood pony cart features a small tub body with twin opposing inward-facing seats with room for four - three children and their governess. The rear is open to provide access to the seating area. One pony would pull this cart. Wood spoke wheels and body are painted red; the wicker cart is painted butter cream. Thin cushions cover the wooden seats for comfort over bumpy roads. The axel provides a low, stable centre of gravity, which, combined with the relatively high sides provided a safe ride for children. The Governess Cart is slightly larger than the Pony Cart (see #2 – Pony Cart).
Note: Additional photos at the bottom of this page.
Note 2: There are two governess carts in this collection - this one (#1) and #27.

Caveats:
A. In many cases the photos shown are old photographs. This is not done to mislead the viewer, but simply because they were available to us.
B. The carriages/sleighs have been well kept in so far as they have been stored indoors from the time each was purchased by Bert Powell between 1938 and the early 1960’s all the way to the present day. At present the bones of the carriages/sleighs are good, but almost every carriage/sleigh is in need of some love and attention. In an ideal world the potential buyer of each carriage/sleigh would be able to see the carriage in person or arrange for a buyer’s rep to view the carriage in question. As sellers we would be happy to take whatever photos and videos are needed.
C. Moving the carriages/sleighs from King, Ontario (45 minutes north of Toronto) to each buyer’s destination of choice is the responsibility of the buyer and must be arranged by the buyer.
