8. Park Gate Gig

 8.  Park Gate Gig (c. 1905) made by The Thomas Crowe Company, Toronto.  Vented slats on either side of the seat support are for the dog that might accompany his owner on any given outing.  Pebbled leather front skirt with cut out corners to act as handles while climbing into the carriage.  The design suits country roads and rough terrain.  The body is black with merlot fabric seat covers, which match the wheels and undercarriage.  The Park Gate Gig was made for a less formal Sunday drive than a Stanhope Gig.  The seat covers need to be replaced. This was the first carriage of the LC "Bert" Powell collection.

The Crowe family seems to have been quite involved in carriage making in southern Ontario in the 1800’s:

A gig = a two wheeled cart pulled by one horse

Caveats:

A. In many cases the photos shown are old photographs. This is not done to mislead the viewer, but simply because they were available to us.

B.  The carriages/sleighs have been well kept in so far as they have been stored indoors from the time each was purchased by Bert Powell between 1938 and the early 1960’s all the way to the present day. At present the bones of the carriages/sleighs are good, but almost every carriage/sleigh is in need of some love and attention. In an ideal world the potential buyer of each carriage/sleigh would be able to see the carriage in person or arrange for a buyer’s rep to view the carriage in question. As sellers we would be happy to take whatever photos and videos are needed.

C. Moving the carriages/sleighs from King, Ontario (45 minutes north of Toronto) to each buyer’s destination of choice is the responsibility of the buyer and must be arranged by the buyer.
