1. Governess Basket Cart

 1. Governess Basket Cart (c. 1890).

Governess Basket Cart (c. 1890). This two-wheeled wicker and wood pony cart features a small tub body with twin opposing inward-facing seats with room for four - three children and their governess.  The rear is open to provide access to the seating area.  One pony would pull this cart.  Wood spoke wheels and body are painted red; the wicker cart is painted butter cream.  Thin cushions cover the wooden seats for comfort over bumpy roads.  The axel provides a low, stable centre of gravity, which, combined with the relatively high sides provided a safe ride for children.  The Governess Cart is slightly larger than the Pony Cart (see #2 – Pony Cart).

Note: Additional photos at the bottom of this page.

Note 2: There are two governess carts in this collection - this one (#1) and #27.

It is 2024 and as described in the opening blog posting, we are selling all 29 carriages in our possession on an individual basis. This is carriage #1.

Sale price: $1000 Canadian dollars. To convert to US$, divide by 1.3

Caveats:

A. In many cases the photos shown are old photographs. This is not done to mislead the viewer, but simply because they were available to us.

B.  The carriages/sleighs have been well kept in so far as they have been stored indoors from the time each was purchased by Bert Powell between 1938 and the early 1960’s all the way to the present day. At present the bones of the carriages/sleighs are good, but almost every carriage/sleigh is in need of some love and attention. In an ideal world the potential buyer of each carriage/sleigh would be able to see the carriage in person or arrange for a buyer’s rep to view the carriage in question. As sellers we would be happy to take whatever photos and videos are needed.

C. Moving the carriages/sleighs from King, Ontario (45 minutes north of Toronto) to each buyer’s destination of choice is the responsibility of the buyer and must be arranged by the buyer.

3. Victoria

3.  Victoria 1905, Brewster Co., New York City.  This carriage was made to order for Mr. John Dixon of Rosedale, Ontario in November 1904 and shipped in March 1905 at a cost of $1,300.00.  The Victoria Carriage design did not include a door but featured wide-open access to allow plenty of room for the many layers of a woman’s dress.  The wide patent leather fenders acted as mud-flaps.  A separate driver’s seat is evidence of the economic status of the owner.  This was typically used by a woman for social visits and shopping. Bert Powell bought this carriage and the Bachelor’s Brougham (#4) from Mr. John Dixon c.1940, which means both have had only two owners from 1905 to 2024.

7. Fringe-Top Surrey

 7.  Fringe-Top Surrey (c. 1900) was probably Canadian made.  Black body and seats with black patent leather front skirt.  The top is black with a green-fringe, the wheels and undercarriage are dark green with a light green trim.  This carriage was made for pleasure driving for four passengers with a protective top for relief from rain or sun and springs to make travel on gravel roads comfortable.

8. Park Gate Gig

 8.  Park Gate Gig (c. 1905) made by The Thomas Crowe Company, Toronto.  Vented slats on either side of the seat support are for the dog that might accompany his owner on any given outing.  Pebbled leather front skirt with cut out corners to act as handles while climbing into the carriage.  The design suits country roads and rough terrain.  The body is black with merlot fabric seat covers, which match the wheels and undercarriage.  The Park Gate Gig was made for a less formal Sunday drive than a Stanhope Gig.  The seat covers need to be replaced. This was the first carriage of the LC "Bert" Powell collection.

The Crowe family seems to have been quite involved in carriage making in southern Ontario in the 1800’s:

A gig = a two wheeled cart pulled by one horse

9. Square Landau

 9.  Square Landau (c. 1880) was made in London, England.  This four-seat carriage can be driven with the top up or down, the first true original convertible.  The only windows in the carriage are in the doors; they can be lowered into the door panels.  The diamond tufted leather seats are original, but in need of repair.  The top is leather as is the driver’s seat cover and storage flap cover below his seat.  Given the need of a driver and purpose of this vehicle, it would have been owned by a person of means.  The interior leathers, the driver’s seat cover and leather flap are in need of repair.

Sometimes referred to as a “Landeau” – the proper spelling is “Landau”. The name “Landau” comes from the city of Landau in Germany where this style of carriage became popular.
